Audi’s US Dual Strategy: From Georgia Plant to Exclusive SUV

German premium brand Audi is preparing to strengthen its position in North America. The US market is taking a central role in the company’s global growth strategy. According to Audi’s management, the brand has not fully tapped its potential in this region yet. At the heart of these ambitious plans are two major events: an officially announced $4 billion investment in Georgia and inside information about a planned off-road model in South Carolina. In October 2026, Audi officially confirmed the construction of its first plant in the United States. Near Perry, Georgia, the company plans to invest $4 billion and create up to 4,500 jobs. Construction will begin in 2027, and the first vehicles will roll off the line in the early 2030s. The plant’s annual capacity will reach 200,000 vehicles, mainly focusing on premium SUVs built for North American customers. Gernot Döllner, Chairman of the Board of Management at Audi, stated that this step is backed by the state’s strong logistics infrastructure and aims to make North America the third main pillar of the company’s global network, alongside Europe and China.

While AUDI AG was announcing its large plant in Georgia, another interesting detail leaked from US media and official sources. A US official mentioned that a plant in Blythewood, South Carolina, plans to produce 25,000 vehicles per year linked to the Audi brand. This facility is being built with a $2 billion investment from the Volkswagen Group and belongs to Scout Motors, a brand specialized in body-on-frame off-roaders and pickups. Although Audi has not officially confirmed its South Carolina plans, the 25,000-unit figure fits logically with Gernot Döllner’s previous statements. He openly noted that after launching the Q9, the company is considering expanding its SUV portfolio, directly naming competitors like the Mercedes-Benz G-Class and Land Rover Defender, which have low production volumes but high profit margins.Looking at both pieces of news together reveals Audi’s well-calculated dual strategy in the US. The 200,000-unit capacity plant in Georgia ensures mass supply of premium SUVs, local cost efficiency, and market share growth. At the same time, an Audi off-road model based on Scout's body-on-frame platform allows the brand to enter an exclusive, high-margin segment without spending resources to build a new platform from scratch. This smart allocation of Volkswagen Group resources gives Audi all the right tools to become a leading premium brand in North America.
