When the Formula 1 world was resting during the quiet summer break, the silence suddenly broke. A little more than one week before the Grand Prix in Zandvoort, exactly at 3 PM British time, Cadillac shared big news: Graeme Lowdon was removed as team principal immediately, and Marcin Budkowski took his place. This change happened much earlier than expected, which created many questions in the paddock, but the Americans already made their decision.
As the team's CEO Dan Towriss explained, Lowdon leaving was planned for some time in the future because his role was very important when building the team's foundation. However, a different kind of leadership was needed for the long-term vision. Even so, the change came earlier than expected. The main goal is not to repeat old, used paths or improve old models Cadillac wants to build something completely new and innovative before the team is fully formed.
Why Marcin Budkowski? The Polish specialist has great and diverse experience in Formula 1. He worked in legendary teams like Prost, Ferrari, and McLaren, knew the strict rules of the FIA well, and led the Alpine team. Towriss believes that Budkowski's technical perspective is the exact mechanism needed to bring the project to a new level.
The arrival of the new director is not just a simple change. There are some problems inside the team, including communication between different departments. As Towriss admitted, "teething issues" are normal for a new organization, but they need to be fixed quickly to remove internal barriers. This is Budkowski's main mission. At the same time, he must make sure the 2026 car is technically ready, quickly fix reliability problems, and move the team's center a bit more toward the United States, where General Motors has huge technological resources.
Artificial intelligence (AI) and other modern innovations will completely change the future of Formula 1. Budkowski himself notes that teams will look very different in this technological age. Even though the pressure is huge and every week in the paddock is like a strict test, Budkowski is ready for this challenge so that Cadillac can show its special place in the top league of motorsport.
